Lambani embroidery
Banjaras are also known by other names like Laman, Lambadi or banjari. “Laman” is a word of Sanskrit origin derived from the word lavana (salt). They are originally bullock and salt merchants, believed to have migrated from the Gor province of Afghanistan. In India they are believed to have origins from the Marwar region of Rajasthan.
Lambanis are believed to have lived in forests. Hence they are also known as ‘Vanachara’. This nomadic group is believed to have travelled from place to place for selling the spices by using domestic animals as caravans. This is also considered as one of the reasons for the Lambanis being termed
as“Vanachara”-“Vanajara”-
“Banajara”-“Banjara”

Laman banjaras are people having a lot of aesthetic knowledge. They have a culture which bears the beautiful traditional aspects of both the Afghani and the Indian cultures. The laman Banjaras may be Hindu or Muslims
They speak what is known as Gor Boli and sounds similar to Romani, Lomavern, Rajasthani, and Marwari. Though most Lambanis have adapted to the regional language and are losing their native language.
A prized art of the Lambanis, which also forms a part of their tribal identity, is the kind of embroidery practiced by them. They have a skilled hand in stitching small glass mirrors, coins, and decorative beads onto the clothes which they embroider.
