Tarapur and Ummedpura are quite small twin-villages in Jawad district of MP. Situated on either side of river Gambhiri, main occupation of these villagers has been dying and hand block printing for centuries. Over the time the river has been reduced to a monsoon river, which has water only for a few months during and after the rains, the rest of the time the river is dry. Owing to this and several other factors, in the past 50 yrs or so, a village which thrived on printing and dying with over 700 printers, is now left with only three-four printers who have kept up with the times and are printing for the contemporary market. A few others are still catering to the tribal market. The rest of them have moved on to other professions.
--
Tarapur -Ummedpura are well known for indigo dying, alizarin dying and mud resist printing similar to Bagh prints and Bagru prints with a distinct identity of their own which helps them stand out on their own.
--
Tarapur printers are also well known for their tribal odhani prints, Nandana prints, and phetia and lugda prints all for the tribal market, and some of them now for the contemporary market as well.
