My next destination while travelling was the historical city of Ujjain
Hello friends,
My next destination while travelling was the historical city of Ujjain. Situated in the central part of India Ujjain is just a three and a half hour ride from Bhopal and well connected by rail routes. More famous for the Mahakal temple and the Mahakumbh this town in Madhya Pradesh is also known for Batik printing. Bhairongadh which is about 8kms from Ujjain is the center of batik and screen printing. Practically, each and every household in this small locality is into batik printing. The batik prints of Ujjain are mostly done by applying wax with the help of blocks (as in block printing) and then dying the fabrics in naphthol dyes or cold water dyes. These are mostly done on single colour.
Another way of applying molten wax is with the help of a 'kuchi'. The motifs are drawn free hand on the fabric and then put into the dye.
Salwar suits, sarees and bed sheets are the main products made in bhairongadh.
